The problem is that the natural world doesn't necessarily behave in patterns that match our cognition, and never has. People's brains make up all sorts of shit trying to make sense of the random nature of the universe. You often have to train yourself for years to be able to make the distinction between pattern and noise, and even then you'll occasionally fail. That's a major part of the reason why peer review exists in the sciences.
