After lagging on vaccinations, Chargers now near 90 percent

Less than two weeks ago, the Chargers were near the bottom of the NFL in player vaccinations, with less than 50 percent of their players vaccinated. They’ve made significant progress since then.
The Chargers are now close to having 90 percent of their players vaccinated, with many fully vaccinated and others having the first shot of the two-shot series of vaccines.
That vindicates the thoughts of Chargers coach Brandon Staley, who said on June 16, when the Chargers were behind on vaccinations, that he was confident his players would get the job done.
“I would say that these things have a way of working themselves out the closer that you get to competition,” Staley said, via the Orange County Register. “I know that our players are fully aware of what’s at stake.”
The Chargers’ entire coaching staff is fully vaccinated.
The NFL plans to have fewer restrictions on team gatherings for teams that have more than 85 percent of their players fully vaccinated, which coaches and players have said confers a competitive advantage.

Jon Gruden: Every Raiders coach and all but four or five players are vaccinated

The Raiders are one of the top teams in the league in one category: Player vaccinations.
Raiders head coach Jon Gruden said today that every coach on his staff is vaccinated, and so is “almost every” player.
Gruden said he thinks four or five players on the team remain unvaccinated. He did not name those four or five.
NFL teams with more players vaccinated will be at a competitive advantage, as they’ll have more freedom of movement in team facilities and fewer restrictions on team meetings.
The Raiders are one of 14 NFL teams with at least 90 percent of their players vaccinated.

KYLE SHANAHANC, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
NBC's Matt Maiocco reports the 49ers have exceeded a 90 percent player vaccination rate.
Maiocco added that general manager John Lynch said that the team did not pressure players into getting the vaccine. Instead, Lynch said the team chose to "educate them as much as possible" and communicate effectively. With a slew of players hitting the reserve/COVID-19 list to open training camp, teams with higher vaccination rates may experience smoother training camps with a higher portion of their players available to practice.

Pete Carroll says all Seahawks coaching staff, all but one player to be vaccinated
Posted by Curtis Crabtree on July 28, 2021, 10:55 PM EDT
USA TODAY Sports
The Seattle Seahawks were the only team in the NFL last season to not have a single positive case of COVID-19 hit their roster between training camp and the end of the season.
With training camp for the 2021 season getting underway on Wednesday, the Seahawks are again doing their best to keep the virus from disrupting their upcoming campaign.
Head coach Pete Carroll said after practice on Wednesday that all of the coaching staff is vaccinated and all but one player from their 91-man roster has had at least one shot of a COVID-19 vaccine.
“By the time we get everybody processed we’ll have one guy that isn’t vaccinated so we’re really thrilled about that,” Carroll said. “Our guys made an extraordinary effort to take care of one another. The statement they made, particularly the guys who were uncertain about what to do, they made a decision based on their team as well as themselves and they wanted to do what was best for everybody and what would be safest for everyone and so that’s a marvelous statement that our guys made.
“Now there’s a couple guys yet that have to get their second shot and there’s a couple waiting for the time frame to catch up here but within, I don’t know, eight or nine days or something like that (they’ll be clear).”
Carroll said that the one player who hasn’t elected to get the vaccine has personal reasons against doing so.
“He’s got real personal reasons why. It goes back to the family and stuff and so we’re gonna take care of him throughout,” Carroll said.
In addition to the vaccinations, Carroll said they are going above the recommended testing for players to ensure the team is in a good place as camp begins. They are testing all of their players for the first five days of camp to make sure none of their players picked up an infection in their travels to Seattle for camp. He also said testing they will test more frequently than the 14-day standard set in place by the league currently.
“We’re deep in the fighting to get this thing done in the very best way possible,” Carroll said. “Our guys are willing to make the strides and the steps that they got to make and and the sacrifices, and whatever, but they’re doing it for the right reasons and they’ve got really good information that they’re going on and I’m really thrilled about that response.”

Cole Beasley claims COVID-19 vaccine information being withheld from players
Posted by Charean Williams on July 28, 2021, 5:41 PM EDT

It didn’t take a colored wristband or the mask he wore underneath his nose for anyone to know Cole Beasley‘s vaccination status. The Bills receiver has made that clear for weeks, even engaging in social media arguments over the vaccine with teammates.
Whether he intended to or not, Beasley has turned himself into the spokesman for unvaccinated players.
As he met the Bills media corps Wednesday, Beasley read a statement he had written on his cell phone before taking questions. He said he was doing it “out of respect for teammates and coaches” and thereafter would address only football questions.
“I wanted to start this off by saying, I’m not anti- or pro-vax. I’m pro choice,” Beasley said. “With that being said, the issue at hand is: Information is being withheld from players in order for a player to be swayed in a direction he may not be comfortable with. When dealing with a player’s health and safety, there should be complete transparency regarding information that is vital in the decision-making process. Without having all the proper information, a player can feel misguided and unsure about a very personal choice. It makes a player feel unprotected and gives concerns about future topics regarding health and our ability to make educated decisions. With regard to our overall safety, we have to know we are armed with full knowledge and understanding that those who are in a position to help will always do that based on our individual situation. Some people may think I’m being selfish in making this a ‘me’ thing. It’s all about the young players who don’t have a voice and are reaching out to me every day because they’re being told if they don’t get vaxxed, they’ll be cut. Agents are being told by teams that if they have unvaccinated guys, they will not be given opportunities as of now to be seen in workouts. So once unvaxxed players get cut, they’re losing a dream they have worked their whole lives for over a vaccine that has proven to not keep people from contracting COVID as we’ve seen. Every doctor I’ve gone to with questions begins every sentence with “from what we know now,” which tells me we don’t know enough. The NFLPA is working to have vaccinated players tested more frequently than what the NFL initially stated. A lot of players got the vaccination with the idea that these rules were already set in stone, and they’re not. It is common sense that if a vaxxed or unvaxxed player is tested less frequently the likelihood of a player being pulled for COVID drops dramatically. In regard to player safety, I will conclude by saying we all want to be safe. For so many players around the NFL, safety does not solely mean avoiding the COVID virus. Our health is the now and years beyond, which we are trying to protect with our personal choice while doing all the things we did in our protocol during a very successful 2020 NFL season.”
Beasley claimed that was the end of his take about the vaccine. An hour later, though, he tweeted a song he wrote and recorded about vaccination entitled “I Am Not Like You.” The tweet included the words to the song and says it’s his last tweet until the season ends.
