My clue is once scientists reach an overwhelming consensus. One, two, or even twenty voices can be full of shit (especially once money starts flying around). But when you have 80-90+% of experts in their field having a least a general agreement on something (even if they still quibble over the details), then you can feel confident that what they're saying is at least in good faith. It could still be wrong, because science is like that sometimes, but it's not the work of someone trying to manipulate opinion.
