Ditch the gloves. They just give people a false sense that they are safe when in reality, you are much more unsafe. Wash your hands. Disinfect your hands. Wearing gloves does not change this one single bit.
Or you could do what I do when I go out. I do wear utility gloves OVER some cheap disposable gloves (and the disposable gloves I double glove). When I get back from entering the store I was in the disposable gloves come off and then I take disinfecting wipe and wipe my steering wheel and all the places inside my truck I touched. Then new pair of disposable gloves (double gloved again) go back on my hands.

But then I have very little trust that carts are being wiped down or that everyone is wearing a mask(let alone properly), and I will be paranoid about that since i live with my folks and both are 73+ years old.

Okay. Here's a HUGE hole in your method. Do you disinfect everything you brung home?

And why do you think these gloves are protecting you? From what?

Whit, you would be better served carrying hand sanitizer and sanitizing your hands after everything you touch.

In the field of hazard abatement, PPE is a last resort because each have it's own hazards. The PPE are specific and are to be used for a specific purpose. As the vector to the disease entering the body is respiratory, gloves do absolutely nothing. No matter how many pairs you slap on.

      This from the CDC:

      When gloves aren’t needed

Wearing gloves outside of these instances (for example, when using a shopping cart or using an ATM) will not necessarily protect you from getting COVID-19 and may still lead to the spread of germs. The best way to protect yourself from germs when running errands and after going out is to regularly wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
It's a free country, but as your friend and a professional with over a quarter of a century in this field I highly recommend you ditch the gloves and get some hand sanitizer and wash your hands as frequently as you can.

If you need Hand Sanitizer you can get a GALLON from NAPA.

      • When shopping, we wear gloves, masks, and eye protection. We load up the car then remove the gloves and use hand sanitizer as needed. We also sanitize our shoes before getting into the car. I understand that the gloves can be transmitting germs from one item that is touched to another so we treat these items as if they are contaminated. When we get home, we sanitize all of the packaging for items that need to go into the freezer or refrigerator. The other items stay in the car for 3-4 days before we put them away.

We then wash all the clothing we were wearing and usually take a shower before settling back in.

        Is this extreme?

          It's perfect.

One other "trick" I use is I do not grab the product in the front. Being taller, I reach and get a product in the middle or back to prevent taking home something that someone else touched.

I usually wear a layer of clothing under my clothing. Like a Tshirt and shorts/jogging pants. When I get home I put my outer clothing in a box in the garage and take my shoes off there. I wash the week's worth of outer clothing on Sunday for the next week.

I thought this was a little extreme at first but the wife insisted so I did it initially to appease. But now it gives me a comfort level.

          • Yes, we usually do the same thing, picking an item in the back that has likely not been touched nor coughed on...lol.

The glove thing is something that I picked up working in the prison and jail over the years. You would be amazed how often I had to drill into guys proper hygiene around food, especially when the prison where we were preparing 1200-1300 per meal (on a popular meal). In the jail made sure guys had gloves when serving the food (this is more problematic in the prison system but made sure when handling raw meats even frozen they had them).

I care hand sanitizer on me as well. And the utility gloves I use get dropped in the washing machine the second I come in the door. We normally buy bulk with meat so its into new packages before going into the a big standing freezer we have. Stuff I order from Amazon gets wiped down on the outside package. After stuff is put away drop my clothes into the dirty clothes basket and when there is a load they get done.

That was an excellent article, Deborah. Appreciated by myself and the Mrs. Cheers

                    • Meanwhile in Michigan more county sheriffs are saying publicly they will not enforce Gov Whitmer's executive orders. The latest is Livingston County Sheriff.

The lists so far and it might not be comprehensive:

                      Benzie
                      Leelanu
                      Manistee
                      Mason
                      Shiawassee
                      Livingston

I really really wonder about the need about the need these sheriffs seem to have to state publicly that they are not going to enforce her orders. The need to do so feels a really political calculation here.

                      • I used to live next to the Mason County sheriff when I lived in Ludington (he wasn't sheriff then, though). I'm surprised he went all political like this but that side of the state is definitely red. They're also Packers fans, so what do they know?

Oh trust me I know that entire side is red and the DeVos family has a ton of political pull there.

                          • Selective enforcement of law as policy is not law enforcement. They should all be removed from office.

                            • Eh, at least here in Michigan, there's always been a degree of selective enforcement allowed by the state deferring to local decisions (for example, why no one in Snyder's administration went after the City of Grand Rapids for passing and enforcing a measure that decriminalized marijuana despite state and federal law).

Now that said, they SHOULD be removed from office for endangering the public they vowed to serve.

                                Yep.

The Livingston county prosecutor today says he will refuse to prosecute anyone brought up on charges for defying Whitmer's EO. His logic being that clearing up ambiguities in the EO via a FAQ does not make it law.
