He hit a home run too. I remember him talking about it on Carson a few days after the Series.

The game sure has changed since that wonderful '68 season (my favorite all-time Tiger Team, BTW, as I was just an unjaded 13-yr-old country boy and those Tigers were my heroes). No divisional baseball, no playoffs, no DH, no 5-man or more starting rotations (and yet pitching dominated baseball), and nothing any more performance-enhancing then "greenies". Day-time baseball, not only for the World Series, but each and every weekend. Doubleheaders during which you sat back and relaxed or hit the concessions rather than being broomed out of the park between games having to buy a separate ticket for the 2nd game. Real grass in most stadiums, domeless baseball parks where the weather was a factor more often than not, no piped-in music unless it came from the pipes of the organ, baseball scoreboards that were nothing but scoreboards, players that played their entire careers for the same team (such as Al Kaline, Mickey Mantle, Roberto Clemente, Ernie Banks, and countless others), I could go on-and-on...

Nice memories......... I recall the Nuns actually bringing in a couple of TV's, and letting us watch one of the games at school. Unheard of! The best memory is dancing in traffic on West Chicago after our victory. Hundreds of cars had stopped, and everyone was just milling about........having a great time. Amazing moment, considering the past year in Detroit, the Country, and the World.

My teacher (also a nun) stopped teaching for the day each day while that World Series was going on. The TV was rolled into the classroom, the lights were dimmed, and we sat at our desks, boys and girls alike, finishing our school day watching the Tigers (although I don't know if the girls were quite as thrilled about it as us boys). As soon as the dismissal bell rang, I high-tailed it out to the bike rack and raced that one mile home faster than I ever had before to catch the rest of the game on the black-and-white TV in my home.

I truly believe, even to this day, that among nuns, baseball has always been #1!

You'd have to figure they were all Penguin fans though.

Yes, 12 years of Catholic school here too.

Remember the other side of that equation. "The reserve clause".

The owners ruled with an iron fist and screwed the players over as a rule.

So very true, Tony. And it was long overdue when the reserve clause was struck down, because it was the main weapon that owners had in their own best interests that allowed them to screw over their players for so long.

Despite that, I do think that the increased mobility of players resulted in a certain amount of "loss of identity" and familiarity with teams and their players, and that in turn contributed to the decline in overall interest in Baseball as opposed to Pro Football. When I was a kid, the "National Pastime", Baseball, was on at least equal footing with Football as the most popular sport in the country; now, by a wide margin, Pro Football rules as the clear-cut most popular sport in the U.S.

Yet, the New York Yankees STILL dictate the national level of interest in the sport. But now it’s their foolishness that’s driving it. Their stupid spending decisions might keep the league competitive (not to mention more fun to watch when they lose), but it doesn’t seem like a reliable, long-term, business plan.

The NFL, on the other hand, is just plain smarter and is more focused on marketing on a national level. They’ve got issues (they could do with less fawning on specific players and teams, for example) but they’re a lot more flexible than MLB.

NY Yankees name their price on their local TV deal (which is hundreds of millions more than anyone elses) , which they hardly share with the rest of MLB. I think not too long ago, MLB finally started to share some of a teams local media deal which is still a tiny percentage of the Yankees TV deal...

NFL's contract is entirely negotiated by the league and shared equally...

It's kinda funny, but it seems like "America's Pastime" could benefit from a bit of Socailism...

I'm finding the Tigers to be harder to like as they become more like the Yankees and Red Sox.

They will weep for the loss of your adoration.

Just read in SI that the NFL will receive $50 billion in ad revenue over the next 7 years and 23 of the top 25 highest rated TV shows for the fall season were NFL football games (not just among sporting events but all shows). 23 out of 25. Wow.

Why am I not surprised? What a shame, but that quy is about as accident- and injury-prone as any athlete I've ever seen.

He's with the Twinkies now, isn't he?
