I'm getting beyond my football knowledge here.

I assume that the more blockers you have at the point of attack, the more options you've got for running the ball, that two TE's give more protection along the line, tie up the linebackers in blocking schemes, and maximize the chances that a guy like Best has to get into the second and third levels of the defense.

I know some of you guys who have played or coached can handle that question a lot better than I can.

Like I said, if you HAVE to have two TE's to run the ball you already lost - because you won't run the ball otherwise (you can't).

You've just dictated to the defense most of your playbook.

It's the very reason play action has basically been non-existent in Detroit - nobody respects the run.

Only way you change anyones mind is by being able to run out of base - gimmicks don't change minds.

I think alot of people assume the lions will find away to defuse oppurtunities. But, I realy think last season and this season I've seeen enought to not only trust the leadership but to know were headed were we need to be to arrive as a formidable opponent in the NFL

That play looks more like an indictment on what not to do defensively than a RB highlight shot - and quite frankly looks like it very well could have been mistaken for a few Lions defensive gems over the last couple of years.

What did you think of the 93 yd run against UCLA in 2009?

Obviously, that's a high bar you're setting out for Best perhaps because of Barry. If Best ran track in college, took it seriously, he probably would have run a sub 10.2 by now. If you watch his 40 yd at the combine, he stumbles out of the block and still runs the 3rd fastest at the combine.

Do you think Desean Jackson is fast? Best is as fast, if not faster and as good of a big play guy, if not better. This is what Best can bring to the table, similar things as Jackson has done for the Eagles.

The funny thing is Best can even be better in the NFL. He only had 29 carries as a freshman so his sophomore year was really his first year as THE guy and you could see vast improvement from his first game to the last. This guy is coachable, humble and will do what it takes to be the best player he can be in the NFL. If he can stay on the field, get some blocking, you'll think he's the second coming of Barry.

I'm not saying we have to use two TE's to run the ball, but the Lions coaches have already been talking about using the two TE offense a lot - in part to take pressure off of Calvin, but we can also dictate matchups that way.

Right now, the Lions have the potential for at least 3 and possibly 4 matchup problems for any defense. CJ demands double, and has been getting triple covered at times. That's been pretty much the only threat we've had for years.

Scheffler is a matchup nightmare - a big TE who's an accomplished receiver and who can run medium and deep routes. Those guys are really hard to cover. He's too big for DB's and way too fast for most LB's.

Pettigrew is a monster - more of a short to medium type receiver. You've got to keep a linebacker on him, but he's too big for most of them anyway. Assuming he's healthy, in his second year in the league and with Stafford, he's a big threat at all times.

Best is uncoverable out of the backfield, unless you put a secondary guy on him, and he'll eat up players who he's facing one on one. No linebacker in the league will enjoy being the contain guy assigned to him.

Nate Burleson will almost certainly face tons of single coverage and less attention in zone schemes.

And if you blitz Stafford, screen passes and dump offs to his very big and talented receiving/TE corp and to Best should result in a lot of big plays. If you don't blitz Stafford and he has time to throw, well, for god's sake, the guy is going to be a franchise QB (he has to be, it's our turn to have one after 52 years - unreal how long its been), and isn't that what we want to force teams to be back on the heels defending?

Nothing like corn bread washed down with kool-aid spiked with insta-good.

I really like Best.....he's not faster than Desean Jackson. Don't quote me a 40 time because I don't care what his timed speed is.

Subtle trend in the draft - three teams drafted multiple tight ends high: the Ravens, Patriots and Texans. As in first and second day high. Which is to say, multiple TEs on the field at the same time. Like, more often than not.

Something's brewing. And it isn't Kool Aid.

Both JB and DJ ran a 4.35 at their respective combines.

Both listed as 5'10".

JB weighing in at 199#, DJ is listed on NFL.com as 175.

They ran a race when Best was a freshman at Cal but neither would say who won!

Here's some local bloggers toasting Jahvid. Good stuff!

I don't know if we'll see a ton of two TE sets per se, but we'll probably see a lot of 2 TE's in the game together, with Scheffler split out wide.

Looking at Best's stats at Cal. Most impressive, aside from the 7.3 ypc, he never lost a fumble.

I don't know if that's true....I thought he fumbled in the Oregon game his sophomore year. Of course it rained and the field was wet, so he might be excused for that one!

It said he never lost a fumble, not that he had fumbled.

(cue "his fumbles never hurt the team!" rant)

The column to the left of "lost" says fumbles which I assume means fumbles. I would assume "lost" means fumbles lost. In any event, I thought he lost a fumble in that game but that was nearly two years ago....hell, I can't remember things that happened last week.

Fraquar is exactly right, 2 tight end sets only make sense if you can run the ball effectively, they make absolutely no sense if you don't run the ball effectively, in fact its harder. You are bringing in extra defenders to stop the run.
