Well, he hasn't been horrible or anything -- just not as dominant as his regular season would suggest, I guess. He left the Yankee game 4-4, correct? And this one 3-0.

I know I'm kind of nitpicking here, but I'd like to see a Chris Carpenter type of performance at least once in these playoffs, or something near that level. Justin has been far from untouchable in these playoffs.

I'm not blaming him...just want to see a little bit more.

And I'm not really sure what more you expect to see.

It's not like he's leaving pitches hanging or has lost velocity. Good batters make good swings. The really really bad pitch I'd put on him was that straight fastball he gave to Cruz because he was frustrated with the ump not giving him the corner for his breaking ball.

Otherwise, it was just good batting from good batters. Wilson honestly looked worse to me, but I doubt anyone in Texas is complaining all that much.

Like I said, I'm probably nitpicking. 5 earned runs in 9 innings isn't the worst thing in the world...but it's definitely not the best, either.

But as far as this game went, yeah, the offense was to blame. No doubt.

That makes more sense...especially considering what he said in the post game interview I saw this morning.

Ogando and Feliz were filthy. Credit to them.

If by "filthy", you mean nothing but upper 90's fastballs that the Tigers were horribly behind all game, then yes.

Feliz threw one (maybe two) offspeed pitches. Ogando threw maybe five. The vast majority of their pitches were simple fastballs that the Tigers kept whiffing on in a comical fashion.

It's okay to admit the Tigers sucked... you don't always have to apologize for them.

Betamin was missing those pitches from Feliz by about 5 feet. You could have given him 10 strikes and he still would have struck out.

Yep.

I get that an 97-98-99 mph fastball is not exactly an easy pitch, but if that's all you're throwing, playoff-caliber hitting should be able to catch up to it.

The Tigers never did. They stayed well behind it and kept whiffing.

Uh, Feliz was hitting 101. You try to hit that. It's not easy.

last night i was thinking that the tigers lost exactly to the rangers as the yanks lost to the tigers in game 5 of the first series.

Yep. Yanks should have won that game just like the Tigers should have won last night. That's baseball.

And I said as much.

But if that is all you are throwing, good hitters will catch up to it. That's why pure power arms with no good secondary pitch are routinely shelled at the major league level.

I didn't see it...but how does Feliz usually pitch? He's got the rep of one of the better closers in baseball? Was he pitching to the Tigers differently than he has the last 2 years?

Feliz has a curve ball and changeup that are considered "average"; which are good enough to keep people guessing. He usually mixes those offspeed pitches in when it looks like hitters are starting to make contact with his fastball.

Which the Tigers never did, and in fact looked absolutely silly trying.

Feliz blew 6 saves this year, so he is clearly not unhittable. He was 32/38 (84%) in save opportunities.

Choke job was a poor choice of words on my part. What's frustrating is the multiple-year issue of not doing the simple, little things that will put them in a better position to win games.
Successful bunts, hit and runs, etc., but most importantly, getting that runner in from 3rd with less than two outs.

That said, Jamie, you are correct; it is quite an accomplishment to be one of the "last four standing", and they must be doing something right (other than last night ) to be in this position.

No, I think you were right that the Tigers choked the game away last night. I only thought that pinning the choker label on Jackson, who was the ONLY guy who got a hit with RISP, was silly. The entire team choked, and Jackson wasn't even the primary choker.
