I was completely against this last year until Jake Butt went down. Screw that, unless they’re in a playoff games I’d pass too

Yeah....if you’re a 1st rd pick and you’re not in the playoff there’s no incentive to play in the bowl games. It’s a good business decision

For 3-4 years, these kids are nothing but a tool colleges use to make money while grossly "underpaying" them for their contribution to the school's revenues.

So, yeah... I'm not going to fault any of them for making a sound business decision and hold themselves out of irrelevant games where they can do nothing but lose money by getting hurt.

These schools should have thought about "school pride" before shafting their players for years.

99.9% of these kids will never step on the field of a NFL football game, the sound business decision is to get the education they are providing.

Well, I suppose it's a good thing I'm talking about the 0.01% of kids who are sitting out of their final bowl game, huh?

Absolutely, no arguments against kids making that decision, even kids that aren’t guaranteed first rounders.

Not much of an argument about kids deciding to sit. HOWEVER, there will be some top picks that decide not to. Hence, we will be able to see some top prospects participate in bowl games and this thread is a good discussion.
Even with some top prospects sitting, there are lower rated players that won't sit and will be fun to watch.

Glad to see people beginning to acknowledge the exploitation involved in college sports. Football being the worst offender.

I wish I was young enough and had the skills for a school to grossly under pay me with a 4 year degree.

Why do you call it exploitation?

The vast majority know they will be done with the sport once they graduate - and still can get a free education for playing.

The extreme few that earn a 1st round grade, there is no price that you can put on the media coverage that allows them to earn that. No NFL team in their right mind is going to give 1st Rd money to a HS kid. He needs exposure AND time to grow into a mans body.

The bottom line is IF any of these guys who think they are going to get drafted high are afraid they are going to get hurt an lose their meal ticket - then they SHOULDN'T step on the field to begin with. You will get hurt if you think you will.

It’s exploitation because the very tender schools are using (free education) is severely undermined by the amount of time/effort needed to pay for it. And the value of the “free” thing they’re giving is actually way under the value of the time needed to participate in it.

They act like these kids are getting a “free” education out of the deal....but in reality most of these kids are putting 30-40hrs a week in weight training, film study, practices, travel, ect. The average cost of a years worth of tuition for a non-private out of state school is $26k (about 10k in state).....if semesters are 16-17weeks long and you have to put in 30-40hrs of work to participate, how much is that worth? These kids are being paid minimum wage for a very physically demanding and dangerous job....while the universities rake tens of millions

Now factor in that all the time they spend in practices absolutely take away from their ability to take full advantage of the benefit they are supposed to derive from all this work.....and coach’s will actively dissuade thes players from taking any hard classes that might stunt any on the field performance.

Now I don’t know how you define “free”......but this doesn’t seem like they get anything free at all. They are actually being paid a cut rate for second rate access to this thing that’s supposed to be so wonderful ( and free)

Yep. Playing division one football is a a full time job. It is surprising that any of these kids graduate.

I had a full ride to Auburn, never felt exploited. While i played just one year - it was a great opportunity, got to play with a few who did go on to play in the NFL.
