                  • Brian's UFR Defense is up ..........

talent, you were right, C1 predominated although both C1 and C2 were run.

The destruction had more to do with player's missing tackles or getting fooled than scheme. **

** Scheme was faulted on two counts: (1) McCray should never have been placed in a position where he had to cover Barkely but it probably would not have made a big difference if he had not had to do that and instead a confused Bush covered him. (2) The Ss should have been deployed closer to the LOS; that would have forced McSorely to deal with M's CBs. In this case, Moorehead set the plays up to allow him to abuse the S's and this was done successfully and should not surprise anyone.

Moorehead neutralized Bush by confusing him. No surprise, he's a sophomore. If you want details it's very well documented in the UFR.

There were 3 big pass plays. All three were arm punts; one went to Barkley, one to Hamilton and one to Geseki. McSorely gets the long ball out on these in <2.5s but has a very high trajectory that allows the receiver to get out there and run under it. The Barkley catch was the one he bobbled and then caught. Perfect throw, Barkley not well positioned but made an amazing catch. Hamilton was well covered but perfect throw, perfect catch. Geseki? You saw it, 7 footer coming down with the jump ball. No surprise. All three of these long balls fall into the category of nice throw, nice catch, shit happens.

Brian doubts an ass-kicking like that, esp. where the players miss so much shit is not going to be repeated v. anyone, including osu, on M's schedule.

Hope he's right about that ...... I dunno.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. JH chased Saban from Alabama and caused Day, at the point of the OSU AD's gun, to make major changes to his staff just to beat Michigan. Love it. It's Moore!!!! time

The UFR doesn't highlights flaws with Don Brown or our current defense as much as it highlights how uncompetitive our offensive scheme is because we can't do these things to other teams. We have a Top 5 DL, a pair of lockdown corners, and legitimately Big Ten caliber athletes everywhere else on the defense. Yet we gave up 500 yards. Penn State made life miserable for our safeties and linebackers. When have we ever done this? Every screwup in the Penn State game led to a big play. A bad fill against the Harbaughffense turns a four yard gain into eight. And there were even some non-screwups that led to big plays (e.g. the "arm punt" completions that are actually hard to stop). How is it that we have Amarah Darboh for two years and we never tried to utilize this strategy? Instead, we are throwing retarded fades to Eddie McDoom. Now that we have burned Nico Colilns's redshirt, why don't we chuck up some jump balls to him? The guy is supposed to be Funchess 2.0.

                        Frustrating.

                        • Yes. It's astounding that the offense makes no more sense than when we had Al Borges. Absolutely fucking astounding.

                          • I read the UFR and didn't think it was quite so rosy. I mean, they got torched in C1, pejorative "arm punt" or not. Then Brian said they COULDN'T play zone because RPO slants were eating them alive (true). His only solution was to move the safeties up a few yards.

He considered the run defense "not quite a debacle" and the pass defense a total debacle. Yeah, Rutgers isn't going to challenge Don Brown. But, Ohio State might (remains to be see if OSU's offensive 'improvement' is real or not).

Anywho, that gets to Hanni's point -- Brian is more or less saying that Don Brown had no option but to get bent over by a superior scheme. Can't do C1 because McSorley and his receivers (Gesecki included) are too good. Can't do Zone because RPOs are eating it alive. Still have to account for Barkley, too. That is basically saying it ain't Don Brown's fault -- their scheme is unstoppable.

And there sits Hanni saying, NFS!!!!! Why the F don't we run an unstoppable scheme???? Instead of some horseshit 1980s dinosaur offense that barely dents the likes of Cinci-fucking-nati!

                            • Arm punting is the most criminally underutilized strategy in the country -- by all teams. Before this season, mgoblog was pooh-pooh-ing somewhat the Penn State offense because they caught lots of 50/50 arm punts last year. But maybe they weren't 50/50 balls? Arm punting to huge guys is good strategy. We have our own "Gesicki" -- 6'6" Zak Gentry. The guy is a great athlete. Why we would not just chuck up an arm punt to this guy at least once a game is beyond me. Surely he draws coverage from a 5'11" guy at least sometimes?

                              • That review gives too much deference to RPO plays, there's ways to stop them in zone. You have to be very good at disguising your coverage. If they have a bunch 5 yard slants, have at it. Beeeeennnnddd but don't break.
