Yeah it seems we finally got on board with that.

Hoke's underpaid in the context of what a program of this stature should be paying its coach, though. I'm glad they opened the checkbook for Mattison, but I don't think it means Michigan's days of expecting to get a discount are over. It could or could not be. I hate the attitude that getting to coach at Michigan is somehow part of the compensation package. Pay for quality. No deposit, no return. Etc., etc.

Assistant hires like Mattison are not that common. In fact, his hiring circumstances were the exception, and not the norm. Mattison was one of the top assistants in the NFL, with a job coaching on a Super Bowl contender, when he decided to basically take a DOWNGRADE in a job, and come back to Michigan. You're not going to talk to very many assistants who are willing to take a step DOWN, for LESS MONEY, just to work with a good friend.
Most assistants might be willing to take a HC job, even if the level of competition is a "step down", just to add the coaching title to their resume. Perfect example is what Dan Enos is doing at Central Michigan. He's been a lifelong assistant, who is now the HC at Central. He undoubtedly has his eye on the MSU head coaching job once Dantonio moves on.
Assistants can definitely make or break a program. We've seen our share at Michigan. We've had great ones, (Moeller, McCartney, Carr, Loeffler, Mattison, Hoke) and we've had some bums. (fill in the blank-----------------)"in order to lead America you must love America"

That's an interesting statement by the two of you Nebraska guys. Without a doubt, you both are gonna have a lot more knowledge regarding those Big 12 teams than I'll ever have.
I have been watching the K-State program with interest from a distance ever since they hired Snyder back, to replace a coach that had run K-State's program into the ground in the years since Snyder's "retirement" several years ago. It shocked me how quickly Snyder resurrected that program, and made me a real believer in Snyder for the first time. Back when he had great success there in the 90's, I attributed a lot of it to the pansy-ass schedule the Wildcats played. I look at it completely differently now---he really is a great coach.
How much longer is he expected to coach before retiring for a 2nd and final time?

Agree...I am frankly bewildered at what happened down there in 2004-05 when they finished below .500 in a weak North Division. Hell, even Callahan beat him once.
He is very similair to Osborne in his approach. Fastidious, and relentless. Expects competence in every phase of the game, and if there are problems they are dealt with from one year to the next. Has a detailed blueprint of he wants to do, knows what he needs from a talent standpoint to make it work, expects his team to execute that plan at a high level, and doesn't deviate from it. He then throws in a couple opponent-specific schemeatic curveballs in big games for an edge.
Nobody anywhere has accomplished more with less IMO, praise that I used to reserve for Tom Osborne.

while he doesn't score high on the recruiting rankings, he recruits exactly what he needs for his system. hence, it appears he takes 3 stars and makes them 4 stars. his system and plan are followed on every step of the process.
again, even more impressed than before.. and one usually doesn't say that about a team you don't likeGrammar... The difference between feeling your nuts and feeling you're nuts.
